Take up residence in fully staffed private safari lodges in a stunning conservation area of Kenya. Hosted by the Maasai that set up this leading community tourism project in partnership with donors and outside investors, these luxurious houses are nestled amidst fourteen and a half thousand acres of Kenya’s jaw-dropping landscape teaming with flora and wildlife. Guests can rent just one of the four houses (sleeping 2-6 guests) or hire the entire property for up to 16 guests.

Inside

  • Style: Each architect-designed house echoes the voice of Africa blended with contemporary style. Think African art, oriental carpets and open fires.
  • Bedrooms: Chief’s House sleeps 6, in 3 doubles, each with a dressing room and bathroom. The master bedroom has a large outdoor bath set in the rocks for candlelight bathing under the stars.Colonel’s House sleeps 4 in 2 double bedrooms, each with a dressing room and a sunken bath.Sultan’s House sleeps 2-4, in one large double with en suite bathroom, and a living area that can be converted into a second bedroom.Eyrie sleeps 2 in one double bedroom with en suite, and a secluded outdoor double rock bath with views over our rugged hills to the deserts of the north.
  • Bathrooms: All rooms have en suites or private bathrooms as specified above. The Chief’s House, Colonel’s House and Eyrie all have outdoor baths on the deck or in a private courtyard.
  • For relaxation: Sip a sundowner in a lounge pod on the decking, cool off in the horizon pool, squirrel away in the library or watch the sparkling night skies from the star observatory (equipped with GPS telescope). Massage and spa treatments available on request.
  • For recreation: Under the wing of your private safari guide, head out into the hills and valleys where you can spot an abundance of wildlife including greater kudu, leopard, hyena, klipspringer and the endangered wild African dog.
  • Practicalities: 5 kitchen, house and garden staff with each house; nanny/babysitter available on request; an art gallery and shop on-site

Outside

Each house had its own private courtyard, decking and/or lawn with alfresco dining areas boasting stunning views of the surrounding hills, heavily wooded with acacia species and African olive trees. Shared between the properties are the horizon pool and spa, and a large wooden decking with sunken lounging pods

Food and wine

  • Available on a fully catered basis
  • DIY: Not necessary when each property comes with a fully fitted kitchen and there is a resident, internationally acclaimed chef
  • In-house cuisine: The approach to dining is ‘whatever you want, whenever you want it’. That can be anything from Eggs Benedict washed down with Buck’s Fizz, to the likes of quail in filo, butternut and orange soup or honey and lavender honey ice cream. Meals are usually served in the separate houses, or can be laid out beside the pool.

Getting there

  • On the map: Situated at Ol Lentille, in the Laikipia region of Kenya.
  • By car: 90-minute road transfer from Nanyuki ($250 per vehicle), or 4 hours by car from Nairobi
  • By plane: A charter flight from Wilsons Airport, Nairobi to Ol Lentille airstrip takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. Alternatively, fly scheduled to Nanyuki and take a 15-minute charter flight or a short helicopter ride to the propert
  • Helipad: Yes
